February 14 is getting closer and brings with it the feast of love for excellence: Valentine’s Day. This anniversary has its roots in the past, but only in 1800 we started celebrating it as we are used to do today. It is in the nineteenth century, in fact, that in the Anglo-Saxon countries, the tradition of Valentine – the classic greeting cards dedicated to the feast – is affirmed. Thus, Valentine’s Day begins to become a commercial festivity: from the simple cards of the early 19th century to the present day, where the commercial fallout of this day embraces many different sectors.
From dinners in romantic restaurants to weekend gataways, from themed events to gifts, from flowers bouquets to greeting cards, Valentine’s Day today has a significant economic impact. The annual research Love Index by MasterCard, which monitors shopping made between 11 and 14 February with credit, debit and prepaid cards, highlighted last year that Italy is one of the countries that recorded the highest transactions growth in the reference period, equal to 52%.
So, while the shop windows of the cities are filled with hearts and our social networks are full of themed sponsored posts, the race for the perfect gift begins. But will a nylon and elastane underwear or a polyester boxer be able to bring your partner’s heart full of love? This year, for Valentine’s Day, we want to offer you an alternative: who said that our love cannot be expressed in a green and ethical key?
What we offer you are sustainable Valentine’s Day gifts that, in addition to showing your love, also do something good for our planet. Thus, you truly make your love more significant than the environmental impact of your gift!
Among our proposals for sustainable Valentine’s Day gifts, capable of showing him all your love, you can find wooden watches that take the place of traditional ones with plastic and leather components, underwear in organic cotton or bamboo, personalized gifts and sustainable and practical backpacks in which environmentally friendly materials replace leather and hide. Because if Money can’t buy me love instead, what you can buy is an object that can demonstrate not only your love, but also the desire to create a better world for your future together.
Romantic and ethical jewelry, refined lingerie made of sustainable and handmade materials, romantic clothing in organic cotton, bags that do not require the use of animal materials: in our board, you will find many proposals for sustainable Valentine’s Day gifts to declare your love to your partner. Because if Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, your Valentine will definitely prefer a friend who, just like her, shows love and respect for our planet.
As we have mentioned, Valentine’s Day is an anniversary with very ancient origins: this religious holiday, inspired by the homonymous Saint, has in fact taken the place of Lupercalia, a Roman holiday in honor of the God of fertility Luperco. Lupercalia were very different from the romantic day that we all know today: they included animal sacrifices, extractions from an urn of names that would have formed a couple and that would have had to – willingly or unwillingly – live together for the following year, marches and days of roles exchange between servants and masters. The culmination of the feast provided that, in the streets of Rome, women voluntarily submitted themselves to whipping lashes by groups of young naked men, who were to propitiate fertility and childbirth.
With the advent of Christianity, the feast radically changed its face, binding itself precisely to the figure of Saint Valentine. Who was exactly Saint Valentine, however, is not known.
The versions are contrasting, first of all regarding the figure of the Saint himself: it could be Saint Valentine from Terni, born in 176 and defender of troubled love stories. Another saint with the same name would have died in Rome in 274, executed for having celebrated a mixed marriage, marrying a seriously ill young Christian and a Roman legionary.
According to some it would be the same person, while according to others the Saints would be two distinct figures (and, in this case, it is not known which of the two is the effective protector of this feast). Between pagan sacrifices and Christian martyrs, we thus arrive at the Valentine’s Day as we know it today. But are we sure that today Valentine’s Day, the feast of love par excellence, has no dark sides?
This year, together, we can make it really so. A few simple precautions are enough, to be sure that this feast should not weigh on the environment around us. Give a live plant instead of a bunch of cut flowers, choose an eco-sustainable candle, such as soy-based ones, to illuminate your table, replace the classic box of chocolates purchased at the last minute with a fair trade and perhaps vegan one. And, above all, think carefully about the gift to give to your partner: choosing from our proposals for sustainable Valentine’s Day gifts you can be sure of making an original gift and, above all, that it does not have a negative impact on our planet.
Among our proposals for sustainable Valentine’s Day gifts, not for nothing, underwear is on top.
Are you looking for a gift idea for your girlfriend?
The bralette by Azura Bay is the one for you: made of recycled black lace and produced in compliance with Fairtrade standards, it is available in many different sizes to enhance the appearance of each woman. And if you want to make a truly unsurpassed gift, coordinated undies are also available on the site!

Also in this case, you can choose a comfortable and elegant garment, produced respecting the environment, such as the bralette by Organic Basics, entirely made in TENCEL™. This fabric has botanical origins and its yarn comes from wood fibers. In addition to being softer than cotton, this fabric also absorbs moisture much better by helping the human body in its thermoregulation mechanism. In addition, it is a breathable, resistant and antibacterial material: really the ideal choice for a sporty garment like this bralette, perfect for a woman in constant movement. Also in this case, on the brand’s website it is possible to buy the coordinated brief.
And for him instead?
Among our proposals for sustainable Valentine’s Day gifts, there are boxers, available in many different designs, but with a common strength: respect for the environment. The set by Thought Clothing includes three different boxers, all made of bamboo and certified organic cotton.
Are you looking for the perfect gift box, able to make every man on the face of the Earth smile? With the one by A-Dam you play it safe. This nice packaging, in fact, contains the essential for the “male type”: a pair of boxers (made of 95% organic cotton GOTS certified) and two bottles of beer!
In our showcase of sustainable Valentine’s Day gifts designed for her, we have collected several, so that you can find the one that best suits your Valentine’s personality and style.
Do you want to focus on something romantic, even if you have a small budget?
The perfect solution is the Wild Fawn necklace: in recycled silver and with a small heart, it is a discreet but romantic jewel, which your partner can always carry with her. All the jewels of this brand are hand-made in London on order, so as not to have unsold pieces and not to unnecessarily weigh on the environment around us.
Do you prefer to choose a sustainable jewel, but do you want it to be a great gift for life, an unforgettable and important gift?
Nothing says “I love you” like diamonds. Those of the Aurate necklace, furthermore, also love and respect the planet and the workers: their path is traced from the mine to the construction studio in New York. In addition, the brand uses only diamonds from mines with fair human working conditions, fair wages and which operate in compliance with the local communities. Even the gold used by this brand is 100% recycled, for a truly all-round ethical and sustainable finished product. The necklace that we have included in our selection can be personalized with two letters studded with small white diamonds: the initials of your name and the one of your partner thus compose a unique, personalized and unforgettable gift, which we are sure will make her eyes shine, as much as the shine of the diamonds that adorn it.
If you prefer to focus on something other than a necklace, in our selection of sustainable Valentine’s gifts there are many proposals. Among the earrings, for example, you find those by Akola, made of raffia by a group of women in disadvantaged economic conditions in Uganda; or those by Ecolustre with a small X and a small O in recycled brass and gold, which will give your partner a very special kiss.
You can also choose a ring, like the one by Enji Studio Jewelry in recycled gold; or a bracelet, like the one by Little Joy Jewelery, which symbolizes the concept of harmony and is made according to Fairtrade standards, in a small studio on the Isle of Wight.
Even for him, you will find some truly original proposals in our selection of sustainable Valentine’s Day gifts.
A unisex gift idea, for example, is the bracelet by Workshop One80: made with a leather cord and a recycled brass plaque, which can be personalized with an engraving, being a word, a date or a symbol. For a small price, you can have an ethical gift and tell something about your story: you can order one only for your partner or a couple (with identical or different engravings) to have one of your own too.
Do you prefer to choose a watch instead? We offer you some which, instead of the materials usually used such as plastic and leather, are made of sustainable materials. The watch by Clockwood, for example, it is made of walnut and is really suitable for any occasion, from a business meeting to a hike in the mountains!
The one by MAM, instead, is made entirely of sustainable materials and is placed in a beautiful gift box that contains a matching water bottle.
The women’s sweatshirt by Dedicated is made exclusively with GOTS and Fairtrade certified organic cotton, and, thanks to the simple but romantic graphics, it can be worn within the walls of the house, but also for an evening at the cinema or a Sunday stroll.
Among our proposals for sustainable Valentine’s Day gifts for him, however, we offer you the t-shirt by Run&Feel which, in addition to reminding your partner that he is the hero of your daily life, is also a friend of the environment, being made from 100% organic cotton.
Among our proposals for gift ideas you will also find many other clothing, even elegant and formal, to choose the perfect gift whatever your partner’s favorite clothing style is! In addition to underwear, jewelry, accessories and clothing, in fact, you will find many other categories of products from which to be inspired. For example, you can choose a gift that always accompanies your partner, such as the clutch or the men’s backpack by Ecodream: both are handcrafted in Italy using only leather and cotton derived from production waste or from other processing leftovers.
Then there are gifts that seem made to already project our imagination towards summer and the next romantic escape to the sea. This is the case, for example, of the men’s swimshort by A-Dam, made with recycled polyester: each garment is made with about 8 recycled plastic bottles. This model, then, provides a graphic texture with nice – and irresistible – orcas: it will be the perfect gift if your partner is an eternal Peter Pan.
The bag by Ellen & James immediately recalls the summer atmosphere and the idea of a romantic aperitif on the beach: it is handmade by Balinese artisans starting from a type of cane typical of the island, which is dried in the sun and is then used for the production of truly unique bags.
